"Antibiotic Stewardship in Dentistry and Cannabis and Dental Patients"
Presented by Sanjay Chand, MD & Aman Gupta, MD

Dr. Sanjay Chand has specialized in medicine with an emphasis on clinical therapeutics and infection control. A Clinical Associate Professor at the U of Detroit Mercy's School of Dentistry, he is Director of Infection Control and oversees best practices at the Dental School. He is Director of Dental, Dental Hygiene, Physician Assistant and Nurse Anesthesia courses at the University. Areas of expertise include infection control, pain management, opioids and chronic disease management in the dental patient.

Participants will:

  • Describe the rational for prescribing antibiotics for orofacial infections.
  • Identify prophylactic use of antibiotics.
  • Discuss unfavorable side effects and resistance development.
  • Describe common misuse.
  • Discuss current guidelines for prescribing.

Dr. Aman Gupta teaches clinical pharmacology and therapeutics to dental and dental hygiene students at Detroit Mercy Dental and physician assistant students at the College of Health Professions.

Participants will:

  • Identify systemic and oral health effects in patients using marijuana.
  • Be familiar with demographics of use, methods of consumption, informed consent.
  • Understand the mechanism of THC.
  • Observe possible drug interactions.
  • Discuss chronic dental pain management.
  • Understand the risks of periodontal disease, oral cancer, and caries in users.

"Implant Site Preparation Using Soft and Hard Tissue and Management of Peri-Implant Diseases"
Presented by Bassam Kinaia, DDS, MS, DICOI & Anthony Neely, DDS, MDentSc, PhD

Dr. Kinaia is the Associate Director of Graduate Periodontics at the U of Detroit Mercy Dental School. He is a Diplomate of the AAP and ICOI and serves on the Board of the Michigan Periodontal Association. A clinician with over 25 years experience, Dr. Kinaia has been recognized for his teaching and research fellowship. He currently maintains a position in private practice in Sterling Heights, MI.

Dr. Neely is the Director of Graduate Periodontics at the U of Detroit Mercy Dental School. He is a Diplomate of the AAP and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists. His master's degree in Periodontopathobiology was earned at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. His PhD in Chronic Disease Epidemiology is from Yale University's School of Epidemiology and Public Health. With experience on the Peer Review Panel of the Journal of Periodontology (JOP), he now serves on the editorial board for JOP and maintains a position in private practice in Southfield, MI. Dr. Neely is a Russell W. Bunting Society Past President.

Participants will:

  • Understand the consequences of tooth loss and rationale for socket/ridge preservation.
  • Decide when to perform preservation versus immediate implant placement.
  • Recognize indications for soft versus hard tissue augmentation.
  • Understand principles for guided bone regeneration with and without simultaneous implant placement..
  • Understand current periodontal/peri-implant classification system and risk factors.
  • Be familiar with different non-surgical approaches to manage peri-implant diseases.

"Prolonged Tooth Maintenance vs. Extraction and Implants: Periodontal and Prosthodontic Realities"
Presented by Kyle Hogg, DDS & Leyvee Cabanilla Jacobs, DDS, MSD

Dr. Hogg graduated from the U of Michigan School of Dentistry in 2004, University of Florida College of Dentistry (AEGD) in 2005 and went on to complete his MClinDent Prosthodontics at King's College London, UK. His private practice focuses on prosthodontics, aesthetics, and both the surgical and restorative phases of implant dentistry.

Dr. Jacobs is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and maintains a private practice limited to periodontics and implantology. She is an Adjunct Associate Professor at U of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. She completed her master's and certificate in Periodontics at Indiana University School of Dentistry (2000), received her DDS from U of Detroit Mercy (2002) and Doctor of Dental Medicine from the U of the Philippines (1995).

The aim of this lecture is to present an algorithm that will address clinical deductive reasoning, based on the scientific literature. Multiple clinical cases highlighting prosthodontic and periodontal issues, treatment options and complications will be presented.

Participants will:

  • Recognize the most significant prosthodontic and periodontal factors that influence the decision to save or extract an individual tooth.
  • Identify appropriate interdisciplinary treatment modalities that can improve prognosis to facilitate long-term tooth retention.
  • Identify important factors based on current literature that can help ensure successful long-term implant therapy outcomes.
  • Identify potential complications associated with implant therapy, as well as long-term maintenance of periodontally compromised.
